Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed a key session of the G20 Summit on Sustainable Development and Energy Transition, where he reiterated India’s commitment to achieving ambitious sustainability goals and fostering global collaboration for a greener future.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the resolutions made during the New Delhi G20 Summit, including the group’s collective goal to triple renewable energy capacity and double the energy efficiency rate by 2030. He welcomed Brazil’s decision to take forward these priorities, reinforcing the importance of international cooperation in tackling climate change.
In his address, the Prime Minister outlined the significant strides India has made towards sustainable development. He pointed to key achievements, such as providing housing to 40 million families in the last decade, delivering clean drinking water to 120 million households in the past five years, and ensuring 100 million families have access to clean cooking fuel and 115 million households now equipped with toilets.
Emphasizing India’s leadership in climate action, Prime Minister Modi noted that India was the first G20 country to meet its Paris Agreement commitments. He further outlined India’s ambitious target to produce 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030, with 200 gigawatts already achieved.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s global initiatives to promote sustainability, including the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), One Sun One World One Grid, and the Global Biofuel Alliance. These initiatives reflect India’s proactive approach in addressing global environmental challenges and advancing sustainable energy solutions.
Prime Minister Modi called for a stronger focus on the development needs of the Global South, particularly Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and urged G20 members to support the Global Development Compact announced by India at the third Voice of the Global South Summit. This call underscores India’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable global development, ensuring that the needs of vulnerable nations are given due priority in international climate action.
