Famous Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday morning. She was ill and hospitalized for the last few days in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. The cause of death is reported to be a multi-organ failure.
Political dignitaries of India offered condolences on the passing away of the legendary singer.
Expressing his profound grief, Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu condoled the death of the “Nightingale of India Cinema” and said that “India has lost its voice in the death of Lata Ji”.

PM Modi also expressed his sadness. In a tweet, he said “I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerize people”.

Who was Lata Mageshkar?
Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, to a Marathi and Konkani musician Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. Originally named Hema, she was the eldest of five siblings, including veteran singer Asha Bhosle. Her father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was a classical singer and theatre actor.
Lata Mangeshkar enthralled music lovers in India and across the globe with her mellifluous and sublime voice for several decades.
She ruled the Hindi Cinema like a Queen for several decades and has been the favorite and most sought-after female playback singer of music composers.
Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first playback song for a Marathi film, Kiti Hasaal, at the age of 13, and even acted in a Marathi film, Pahili Mangalagaur in the year 1942.
In the year 1946, she recorded her first Hindi film playback song for Aap Ki Seva Mein, directed by Vasant Jogalekar. Following her foray into playback singing, she achieved her first major breakthrough in the Mahal movie in 1949.
Lata Mangeshkar became an overnight singing sensation with the song Aayega Aanewala and there was no looking back for her after that.
Lata Mangeshkar has also been honored with Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, even as accolades and awards poured her way from India and abroad.
Over the years, the veteran singer won numerous national and international awards including the title of Officer of the French Legion of Honour, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, three National Film Awards, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, and many more.
From bhajans to romantic numbers to patriotic songs, she has recorded thousands of songs in Hindi and other Indian and foreign languages.
