Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi arrived in Georgetown today for a State Visit to Guyana, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 56 years. His visit, scheduled from 20-21 November, highlights the growing ties between India and the Caribbean nation.
Upon arrival, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport by Guyana’s President, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, and the country’s Prime Minister, Hon’ble Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Anthony Phillips. The ceremonial welcome was further enhanced by the presence of over a dozen Cabinet Ministers from the Government of Guyana, underlining the importance of this visit to both nations.
In a rare and special gesture, Prime Minister Modi was also greeted by a colorful and vibrant reception from the Indian community and the Indo-Guyanese diaspora, alongside several Guyanese Cabinet Ministers. The ceremonial welcome continued with a warm reception at the Prime Minister’s hotel, where President Ali was joined by the Prime Ministers of Barbados, H.E. Mia Amor Mottley, and Grenada, H.E. Dickon Mitchell.
To commemorate the occasion and the enduring friendship between India and Guyana, the Mayor of Georgetown presented Prime Minister Modi with the prestigious “Key to the City of Georgetown.” This symbolic gesture underscores the deep historical and cultural connections between the two countries, especially given the significant Indian diaspora in Guyana.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit is expected to strengthen bilateral relations and pave the way for further cooperation in sectors like trade, technology, and culture, continuing India’s role as a key partner in the Caribbean region.
