Kathak Dancer Birju Maharaj Passes Away: PM Expresses Grief

The Padma Vibhushan awardee was 83 years old and died of a heart attack.

Pandit Birju Maharaj, the famous Indian Kathak dancer died on Monday at his home in Delhi. He was 83 years old and died of a heart attack, reported PTI.

Born Brij Mohan Nath Mishra on February 4, 1937, in a well-known family of Kathak dancers, Pandit Birju Maharaj was also a recipient of Padma Vibhushan- the country’s second-highest civilian award.

Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has expressed his deep grief over his death and said that his passing is an irreparable loss to the entire art world.

In a tweet in Hindi, the Prime Minister said, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Pandit Birju Maharaj Ji, who gave Indian dance art a special recognition across the world. His passing is an irreparable loss to the entire art world. My condolences to his family and fans in this hour of grief. om Shanti!”
